and my professional growth
What I Did at ABET
What is ABET?
ABET is a non-profit organization that accredits college engineering and science programs around the world. Those working in the Baltimore office, which is ABET headquarters, are the people doing the behind the scenes work on keeping the company running and organizing both the volunteers and universities. I specifically worked in the accounting department where we dealt with not only the office financials but visits made around the world for the purpose of accreditation. This involves a lot of organizations to ensure we are keeping accurate accounts of what is being charged, who is on our payroll, and where smaller interactions are coming and going from.
What was my role?
I worked in the accounting department within ABET headquarters. Here I was able to work on many tasks outside of just helping the office function and learn a lot about my future career. I was fortunate to work with a wide range of activities like data retrieval, processing PO’s and journal entries, account reconciliations, and providing administrative support. This worked well for me because they were all tasks that would benefit me, but I also had the capabilities of doing previous to the majority of my accounting classes.
I worked closely with each of the five other members of the team for different tasks. There was much more work to be done in accounts receivable and accounts payable than budgeting, however, I was still able to touch on these two. Since I was interning over winter break rather than the summer I was the only intern in the office, but this allowed me to work closely with more important tasks, rather than be assigned fluff work.
