What I Learned

Internships are one of the best ways to learn about potential career paths in a hands-on way. I found that I left ABET with a lot more understanding and knowledge than when I entered. While I knew the basics of what accounting was I had never been able to apply it to real numbers outside of the classroom. This allowed me to take what I had been taught in managerial accounting previous semesters and actually understand it while working here. I learned a lot more about the different ways to organize a large amount of information received every day and condense it so it is easy to read for an outsider. A lot of what I did and learned about came back to how to organize this information in the most informative way. I have learned that this is a big part of accounting and something people outside of the field rely on.

Another critical thing I learned that I would advise everyone interested in accounting or similar fields to learn is Excel. Excel was just one of the many accounting tools we used, but I could always count on being on excel every day. While I thought in my information systems class prior to my internship I was able to understand Excel past my very limited knowledge the skills I picked up at ABET extended past this. There are so many built-in tricks to Excel that are now helping me become more efficient.
